Translating Chuang Tzu into world literature: text and context

Abstract: Chuang Tzu (????), as a traditional Chinese canon, has been translated into English for more than 100 years since 1881, successfully carving niche in the realm of world literature, which become an earth-shattering cultural event academia overseas sinology and literature. According to statistics, book 12 full translations, 50 selected two adaptations. The metamorphosis process “full translation - deep diversified retranslation”, passed through four stages, namely religious, literary, philosophical, reinterpretation phases. Thus, from perspective Damrosch’s view this paper summarizes characteristics different stages based on spatial-temporal contexts. In light form, translational outcomes, mode reading, path entered field literature is specified operational mechanism promoting national dedicated enlightenment practical work introducing abroad. Meanwhile, by reviewing history translations Tzu, sums up deficiencies current activities research activities, with attempt provide constructive suggestions well point out direction future development studies Tzu.
